  Safe Place Program

The Town of Malta has been working with local businesses and organizations since October to establish a community watch “Safe Place” Program similar to programs established in neighboring communities.    Local businesses and organizations participating in the project display a 6” “Safe Place” green triangle decal on their front door and provide a safe place for a child or adult who feels that they are being followed, threatened or harassed.   A person entering a “safe place” and asking for help will be placed out of sight, information relating to the perpetrator will be obtained (both physical and vehicle description including license number) and the incident will be reported to 911.  Currently approximately 40 local businesses have agreed to participate in this program.

As we will continue our outreach efforts with the Malta business community to take part in this program, we feel it is time to approach you as a school officials, homeowners associations, community organizations and especially parents to assist us in getting the word out to our children.  Children are taught at a young age not to talk to strangers, but do we as parents tell them where to go if they feel threatened?  Their first reaction will be to flee, but to where? More than likely they will be a long way from home.  In this potential dangerous situation, it is our goal that the children will automatically look for the green triangle as a safety zone.  We have and will continue to issue press releases to inform the public of this important program, but we believe the best way to reach the children is through the parents.  We urge parents to take time and talk to their children about this worthwhile program.

If you have questions about the program or know of a business interested in participating in the program, please contact Kevin King at the Town of Malta 899-2502.

What is Operation SAFE CHILD?

Operation SAFE CHILD is a New York State identification program that provides our law       enforcement officials necessary information in case of a missing or abducted child. This voluntary program uses the latest digital fingerprinting and high resolution photography to produce a SAFE CHILD ID Card for parents. In addition, this information, stored in the DCJS database, is immediately available to law enforcement agencies within minutes, dramatically increasing the possibility of locating a missing child unharmed. The ID card is for the parent or guardian to keep. It contains necessary, vital information to provide a law enforcement official in case your child is missing. The storage of information in the database is  entirely voluntary and requires the written consent of a parent or legal guardian.
