Candles are a growing source of deadly home fires. In 2001, candles started 18,000 home fires and caused 190 deaths

Each October, the national Fire Protection Association and fire departments across North America observe Fire Prevention Week to mark the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and to promote public awareness of fire safety.

For 2005, the Fire Prevention Week theme is candle safety.

  • Always stay in the room where the candles are being burned.
  • Keep lit candles at least one foot away from anything that can burn.
  • Keep candles away from children.
  • Use sturdy candle holders the won't burn.
  • Burn candles on sturdy uncluttered surfaces.
  • Keep lit candles at least one foot away from curtains, mattresses, and other combustibles.
  • Trim candle wicks to one-quarter inch before lighting.
  • When lighting candles ,keep your hair and clothing away from flame.
  • Extinguish candles when they burn within two inches of their holder.
  • Be careful not to splatter hot wax when extinguishing a candle.
  • Candles are dangerous nightlights. NFPA discourages the use of candles in bedrooms and other areas where people fall asleep.
  • Supervise Children, sore candles, matched and lighters high and out of children's sight and reach, preferably in a locked cabinet.
