EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

In order to enhance the Town’s ability to manage emergency and/or disaster situations the Town has adopted a "Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan". The development of this plan included an analysis of potential hazards that could affect the Town and an assessment of the capabilities existing in the Town to deal with potential problems.

Dealing with disasters and potential hazards is an ongoing and complex undertaking. Through implementation of risk reduction measures before a disaster or emergency occurs, timely and effective response during an actual occurrence, and provision for both short and long term recovery assistance after the occurrence of the disaster, lives can be saved and property damage minimized

Public education and awareness is a critical component of an effective comprehensive emergency management plan. In our effort to promote awareness and provide education, this section of the Town’s web page was developed.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

As you may or may not know the Town’s fire protection is provided by two all volunteer fire companies and the Town’s emergency medical services still rely heavily on volunteers as well.  Over the past several years volunteer personnel have continued to dwindle. Unless these companies are able to attract and train new volunteers, the Town will be forced to turn to paid personnel in order to meet the demands of our Town.  The cost of paying for these emergency services, which according to recent studies has been estimated at $1,500, 000 annually, falls directly on the already over burdened tax base.  If you ever dreamed of becoming a firefighter or paramedic as a child, that dream could still come true.  We strongly urge all residents to consider becoming an emergency services volunteer and encourage local business owners to support their employees in volunteering.  For more information please contact:

CERT

The Town has developed a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).  These CERT members, who have received 17 hours of initial training in basic fire suppression for small fires, first aid, search and rescue and disaster preparedness, will partner with local emergency management personnel in preparing and responding to natural or human-caused disasters.  You might see this team in their green attire at a Town function or emergency helping out our community.  If you would like more information regarding the program, please contact Kevin King, Town Comptroller at 899-2502.

Pet Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies come in many forms, and they may require anything from a brief absence from your home to permanent evacuation. Each type of disaster requires different measures to keep your pets safe. The best thing you can do for yourself and your pets is to be prepared.

Weather Emergencies

In the past tornado watches and warnings have been declared for the Town and fortunately a tornado never materialized.  Nevertheless the time to plan for weather and non-weather related emergencies is now, not when they are occurring.  Please visit the remainder of Town’s emergency preparedness page of our web site, stop by the Town Hall to pick up information fact sheets or call the Town to learn more on how to better prepare for an emergency.  The Town has also designated Star 101.3 fm and WGY am as radio stations to tune to for emergency information.  Weather radios are also a good source of information related to storms and can be purchased from various retail stores.  FOX 23 has also implemented a new weather alert system to which viewers can register to receive notification of school/business closings and/or severe weather alerts.  We encourage you to go to the FOX 23 website at www.fox23news.com/alert and sign up for this program which will provide you with another source from which to receive important information.

Below you will find links to various emergency preparedness documents.
